Adventure Painting: NYC

1969 Gallery and The Guild of Adventure Painters welcomed the public to Astor Place to watch artists paint en plein air, view an exhibition, and interact with the Guild of Adventure Painters' team.

From September 9 - 12, Johnny DeFeo and Aaron Zulpo, the project's organizers, hosted emerging and leading painters at Astor Place. Each day, there were two groups of artists; 10 AM - 2 PM and 2 PM - 6 PM. At the end of each day, the paintings were exhibited on site and rotated by the next day's work.

Our on-site gallery was made from a customized 31-foot Airstream. Along with the paintings made on-site, the Airstream also exhibited paintings by past attendees of the Adventure Painting Residency. This salon-style exhibition featured landscapes from across America. Our project ended with a subsequent exhibition The Scenic Route at 1969 Gallery’s LES space.

About The Guild of Adventure Painters

The Guild of Adventure Painters, founded by Johnny DeFeo, Andrea Heimer, and Aaron Zulpo, hosts the Adventure Painting Residency which is an exploratory painting residency founded in 2018. The residency takes studio artists on a journey that is focused on outdoor exploration and building connections with fellow artists and art institutions along the way. Adventure Painting is set up as a plein air painting adventure; residents are encouraged to make landscape paintings but can interact with the landscape however they see fit throughout the course of the residency. Adventure Painting provides artists an opportunity to travel and explore the American landscape with the hope that it helps advance each artist’s studio practice.
