1969 Gallery presents Adventure Painting, a group exhibition showcasing paintings made en plein air. This exhibition consists of two groups that take artists into nature; SWAB, a traveling artist residency, and a local weekend meetup at Island Pond.
The first group of paintings, which include works by Drea Cofield, Johnny Defeo, Andrea Heimer, Caleb Hahne, Morgan Mandalay, and Aaron Zulpo, were made during SWAB 2020. This residency, which runs once a year, took artists from Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, California, over a 26 day trip in a 30-foot RV. They painted at iconic American landscapes such as Yosemite National Park and Redwoods National Forest, as well as dusty county roads in Warm Springs, OR and unnamed frontage roads along the freeway in California. SWAB is designed as an outdoor painting residency that honors the early landscape painting tradition of traveling west and exploring America’s natural beauty.
The second group is made up of Island Pond participants Keiran Brennan Hinton, Pau Atela, and Mark Ryan Chariker. Island Pond is a site located off the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park, one hour outside of New York City. Here, artists are invited during the warmer months of the year for an afternoon picnic and paint session. The location allows for a quick reprieve from New York while also giving artists the opportunity to paint and build a community.
