1969 Gallery is pleased to present Maud Madsen: 3 Paintings, the debut exhibition in our project space at the Gallery’s new Tribeca location.
Working in acrylic on linen or panel, Maud Madsen explores femininity through narrative depictions of the shared experience of adolescence. The balance of uncomfortable admittance and pleasantness in her work is mixed with playful sensibilities, to prod the personal layer of human reality. Opening Night explores themes of body image and puberty through the depiction of a girl unlatching her bra in a locker room. In the background of the scene is a slender woman lifting a shirt over her head. The differences in the undergarments are depicted both in texture and color of the fabric, as the woman in the foreground struggles with a dotted blue bra, folded over, not maintaining form. The woman in the background is wearing a sleek pink bra representing an antiquated societal ideal of what a young woman is supposed to look and dress like. Madsen’s choice of framing the foreground figure as taking up the most space in the painting represents the internal anxiety of body dysmorphia, and how it affects aspects of daily life, such as undressing. With Strings Attached and Low Hanging Fruit illustrate playful adolescent experiences, a heroine entangled in monkey bars and a game of Cat’s Cradle. In all three paintings, Madsen delves into the nostalgia of childhood, while also confronting the anxiety of societal expectations placed upon the female experience.
Maud Madsen (b. 1993, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her paintings were recently included in In Situ at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY. She received her BFA from the University of Alberta and MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She has been a recipient of the Chubbs Post-Graduate Fellowship at the New York Academy of Art and Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.
