1969 presents July Guzman: Along the Line. In his debut solo exhibition with the gallery, Guzman has assembled a suite of paintings showcasing his deep interest in landscape and abstraction and the sliding possibilities between the two.

His new paintings investigate the expansive environments and golden, shifting colors of southern California where he lives and works. Varying in size, from window-to-vast, the resulting canvases prod viewers to look more closely, ponder the human vantage points and marvel at the world with all its surprising life and matter poking and blinking all around and about.

Guzman also explores the concept of his emerging individual self – these paintings reflect his personal, intimate daily meditations on poetry and life. He projects a sense of time passing over his immediate, shared surroundings. He understands the land of the ephemeral, where one day changes into a new night, and a plant or vulnerable insect lives and dies because of what the darkness of the moon brings about. The 23 year-old was born in Mexico, raised in Northern California, educated on the East Coast; this series encapsulates the ease and tension of Guzman feeling simultaneously forbidden and belonging to a specific place, almost a pun on the definition of ‘natural.’

Guzman is our painterly archivist, and these works record his private act of witnessing.
