Sharing everyday life, meals and ideas can form deep, lasting bonds among a class of aspiring artists earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. When artists recommend, nominate or curate a fellow artist, they strengthen that bond — in quiet, personal moments generosity often prevails over artistic envy.
1969 presents Close Quarters an exhibition of over twenty paintings and works on paper by artists who went to school in New Haven, curated by Toronto-born painter Keiran Brennan Hinton (Yale, ‘16). Brennan Hinton invited the participants and limited his curatorial decision-making to works never-before exhibited, the commission of new works, and “…works I admired and remembered after studio visits, especially pieces that came out from hiding because of an intuitive trust among artists.”
Brennan Hinton had a recent debut solo exhibition (Matter of Fact Mulherin, New York) that functioned as a de facto school reunion. Paintings of Brennan Hinton’s studio, a complex of sheetrock walls he helped to build and now shares with eight other artists, and zoom-in/zoom-out paintings of those paintings, attracted new peers – and a streak of invitations to visit artists in their studios.Close Quarters marks Brennan Hinton’s debut curatorial effort and continues his interest in observation and kinship.
1969 will publish an exhibition catalog featuring artwork images, writings and essays about studio practices and Brennan Hinton’s 30-day diary recording his personal thoughts and revealing the intense, intimate and ongoing relationships among a select group of contemporary visual artists, working and living in New York City.
